Microsoft Word 2007 Crashes on Exit and Won’t Allow the Mouse to Select Text

So I’ve just wasted an evening fighting with Word 2007 trying to get it to allow me to use the mouse while editing a document – made all the more irritating by the consistant crashing on exit, and then restarting automatically only to crash again. What a fabulous piece of engineering.

Here’s the fix for this:

  1. Click on Start, click on Run and type Regedit and hit OK
  2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data
  3. Right mouse click on the “Data” folder and delete it – yes, everything under that nasty foldder
  4. Close Regedit and restart Word

Awesome. Now what the hell was I trying to work on 7 hours ago anyway?
